Understanding data storage units

Decimal and binary storage prefixes describe different quantities. Their similar names are a frequent source of confusion.

The formula

1 GB = 1000 MB; 1 GiB = 1024 MiB

How to use it

A byte contains eight bits. Decimal kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes use powers of 1000, as commonly used by storage manufacturers. Binary kibibytes, mebibytes and gibibytes use powers of 1024. For example, 1 GB is approximately 0.931322575 GiB. MB in this converter always means 1,000,000 bytes. Choose MiB explicitly for 1,048,576 bytes. Do not confuse MB/s with Mb/s: the first measures bytes per second and the second bits per second.
